Loyalty to the wrong person or the wrong thing can be disastrous in our lives. We can’t do the right thing unless our loyalty is in the right place.
Sometimes in our lives, we place our loyalty in someone because of our wants and desires. But this isn’t true loyalty because it can disappear at any time.
Fear is one of the reasons why we stay loyal to the wrong things. Loyalty to a gang may provide safety for a time being, but this is because we are afraid of what would happen if we are on the opposite end. There is no real love.
We need to examine where our loyalty lies; do we have false loyalty or true loyalty? Here is how you can tell the difference:
- False loyalty comes and goes with our needs and wants. This kind of loyalty can trap us because we think its true loyalty, when it isn’t.
- True loyalty is never coerced, or pressured.
- True loyalty sticks with us through good times and bad, it isn’t based on what someone can get out of us and what we can get out of them.
What makes us loyal to someone without being intimidated or pressured to do so?
The simple answer is love, which is unshakeable and unbreakable. When our loyalty is driven by love, we will do the right thing. When we change our loyalty, we are changing the direction of our lives because we are committed to someone or something bigger than ourselves.
He who pursues righteousness and loyalty finds life, righteousness and honor. Proverbs 21:12
